Welcome to Madeline, WI!
Madeline Island is the
largest of the 22 Apostle Islands and is the only one that is not part
of the National Lakeshore. The Island is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide
with a year around population of 180. There are beautiful, long, sandy
beaches, wooded hiking trails and breathtaking views of crystal clear
Lake Superior. You can reach the Island by one of the car ferries that
carry passengers across the 2.5 miles of lake. Regular ferry service
begins early in April with ice breakup and usually continues through the
first week of January. During the winter after freeze-up, cars drive
back and forth between the Island and the mainland on the thick ice. In
winter, and ice road freezes and is plowed between Bayfield and the
Island. At the start and end of winter, when the ice is not safe for
cars, a propeller-driven wind sled that travels on the ice and can climb
out of pockets of open water if necessary maintains public
transportation. Winter ice conditions vary with temperature, snowfall
and wind. It is advisable to call ahead for winter crossing conditions.
Each season has its own
special qualities. Winter is a very quiet, snow-covered wonderland.
There are lodging facilities available, a restaurant and tavern, gas
station and grocery store, which are open to serve you. There are
opportunities to cross-country ski, ice fish, take a sled dog trip, ice
skate and snowmobile or just relax in front of a roaring fire. Spring is
a time for renewal and awakening with businesses preparing for the
summer season ahead. Slowly they start to open their doors to welcome
everyone. Lupines sprout up and bloom in their full glory for all to
enjoy. Summer is a very busy time with many events and long summer days
to fill. You may enjoy a guided wilderness walk, art exhibit and concert
by the Music Camp or live music at the Bell Street Tavern. There is also
an excellent museum, bus tour, golf course, bike, moped, and canoe
rentals. You may choose to hike at the State Park and visit Big Bay
Point, camp, bike, swim, charter a sailboat or try your luck at fishing.
Fall comes with the most glorious colors of red, yellow and orange. Most
businesses stay open through late October, though some will close right
after the first weekend. The trip across Lake Superior enhances the
feeling of "getting away fro it all" and starts you on a truly
unique Island adventure.
