Welcome to Cornucopia, WI!
Cornucopia, on State Highway 13 along
Wisconsin's North Coast, is the western entrance to the Apostle Islands
National Lakeshore. This small, friendly village with its picturesque
harbor is famous for clean, sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. The
spectacular Lake Superior "ice caves" can be viewed on foot
from the ice-covered lake during the winter and these sandstone
formations can be explored by boat during the summer. The community
reflects its fishing heritage, with old fish boats still in the harbor
area. Some of the distinctive old fishing sheds on the waterfront have
been converted to gift shops, brimming with charming gifts and crafts,
local arts, collectables and antiques for the discriminating shopper.
Cornucopia boasts of having Wisconsin's northernmost post office, a
genuine general store, comfort-able lodging and dining facilities where
the food is savored along with the atmosphere. When Cornucopia was
founded in about 1902, travel was mainly by boat. A stagecoach route to
Bayfield which still exists as a road (now graveled and paved) was a
trip of five to seven hours in good weather, and did not operate during
the winter months. The rich history of this village included sandstone
quarrying, lumbering and farming as well as its commercial fishing. This
is a place to rest and relax, to enjoy the natural beauty and
hospitality of this historic village.
