Welcome to Washburn, WI!
Anchored on Wisconsin's North Coast by
beautiful Lake Superior, Washburn offers a menu of simple pleasures for
visitors. Two lakeside parks with campgrounds offer excellent
accommodations for tent, trailer or camper - showers, electric hook-ups,
picnic tables, playgrounds and sandy beaches. The one-mile lakeshore
walking trail is one of many choices for outdoor adventure. Trails for
hiking, biking, snowmobiling, skiing, snow shoeing and ATVing are
nearby.
This "little town on the Big
Lake" offers sailing, boating and year 'round fishing experiences.
The area is lined with hardwood and evergreen trees, complemented with
an abundance of ornamental yard trees, bushes, and shrubs, all combining
together to create a lush, wooded warmth. Spring colors are exciting,
summer lush green, and the fall colors spectacular.
This coastal community emits a sense of
history, which speaks from the 18th-century brownstone buildings, the
antique stores and the Washburn Historical Museum & Cultural Arts
Center. Red Lake Superior sandstone, a popular, high quality building
material quarried locally before the turn of the century, way used to
construct many of the city's historic buildings. They include the
courthouse, library, Washburn Museum (formerly the local bank) and other
commercial buildings in Washburn and area cities. Please join us the
last weekend in July when we honor these beautiful brownstone buildings
with our Brownstone Days Festival.
Washburn is a quiet, secluded community
with a small retail center of essential services. It is the county Seat
of Bayfield County, whose offices are housed in a grand, domed
brownstone courthouse. The northern office of the Chequamegon-Nicolet
National Forest and a Wisconsin Forest office are also located in the
city.
Washburn is a mecca for artists,
including potters, painters, weavers, photographers and woodcarvers.
Shops offer a variety of products from the creators of beautiful works
of art. Celebrate winter in Washburn, with the Merry Ol' Christmas the
first weekend in December and Book Across The Bay in February. This
unique event features a cross-country ski race by candlelight across
Chequamegon Bay between Washburn and Ashland. Bonfire, dance and other
"cool" activities to keep spirits soaring.
